Penjualan telepon seluler atau ponsel di dunia anjlok 9,4 persen pada kuartal pertama tahun ini dan tampaknya akan terus turun sepanjang tahun 2009. Penjualan HP menurun menjadi 269 juta unit. Penurunan itu terjadi setelah dalam lebih enam tahun mengalami pertumbuhan terus-menerus. Demikian diungkapkan kelompok riset Gartner di Paris.

Sedangkan di Indonesia, khususnya dijakarta omzet penjualan telepon seluler (ponsel) turut mengalami penurunan, seperti halnya di ITC Roxy Mas dan ITC Kuningan yang terkenal dengan gudangnya HP, sejak dua bulan lalu terus menurun.

"Memang segmentasi ponsel masih terus terbentuk. Untuk segmen menengah ke bawah, harga merupakan hal yang sensitif. Tetapi, untuk segmen menengah atas harga tidak jadi masalah. Karena bagi kelompok menengah atas ponsel dijadikan bagian dari gaya hidup

"Angka ini turun 0,9 persen dibanding 2008. Pangsa pasar Nokia, Motorola, dan Sony Ericsson tergerus akibat masukknya beberapa handphone merek China. Penjualan Nokia turun 2,2 persen atau 32 juta unit.

Walau turun, kenaikan pangsa pasar justru terjadi pada merek China yang kenaikannya mencapai 65%.

Pasar ponsel pintar justru menggeliat pada 2009. Penjualannya naik hingga 23,8 persen dibanding 2008. Loncatan tertinggi terjadi pada kuartal keempat. Penjualan ponsel merek China naik 41 persen dibanding periode yang sama sebelumnya.
